04/15/2021 Currently, the "Peasant Schools" of Segovia facilitate the cultural education of people in rural areas. To this end, they organize cultural activities and community outreach, which also include disadvantaged groups.
- The cultural association "Escuelas Campesinas" (Segovia) was founded within the Union of Peasants in 1992.
- Its objective is the social and cultural training of people who live and work in the rural areas of the province.
- ISMUR – the rural women's association of Segovia – leads this project
Their programs prioritize the cultural independence of communities, as well as raising awareness about the environment and the problems faced by communities: aging, depopulation, generational change, and the masculinization of the countryside.
The Segovia "Peasant Schools" cultural association was founded within the "Peasant Union" in 1992, as a result of the need to provide social and cultural training to people living and working in the province's rural areas.
ISMUR , a rural women's association founded in 1996 within the Segovia Peasants' Union , leads this broad project, which has an ambitious program and several tools at its disposal. Since 2000, ISMUR has been a member of the four Local Action Groups in Segovia: AIDESCOM , SEGOVIA SUR , CODINSE , and HONORSE-TIERRA DE PINARES.
Programs
To achieve their objectives, they implement 4 programs :
- Childhood. A program dedicated to children, primarily from the towns of the province of Segovia, and the communities in which they live. Through it, they participate in various workshops and activities that, in a fun way, develop social skills to help shape their personal development .
- Promoting youth social and labor integration. Through this program , Escuelas Campesinas organizes training and/or visits to successful cooperatives and entrepreneurial initiatives (agricultural and livestock cooperatives, businesses, and services from various economic sectors) so that young people learn about the resources available in Segovia and have a reference when starting a business in their local area.
- People and Land. This program aims to recover cultural and natural resources that have fallen into disuse due to depopulation and facilitate the social and labor integration of people in rural areas.
- Biodiversity Guardians. This project is promoting the recovery of various vegetable and cereal varieties in the province of Segovia, using cultivation techniques that enhance the sequestration of organic carbon in the soil. Dwarf rainfed tomatoes, yellow winter watermelons, Matanzas onions, Castilian chickpeas, and Chamorro wheat are some of the varieties that will be monitored in 14 municipalities in the province.
Tools
The Rural Schools programs have developed practical tools through which they implement the objectives of each project:
- Virtual artisan market : a website where all artisans have a place, especially those most dedicated to preserving traditional techniques and crafts.
- People and Land Catalogs: The People and Land project records and organizes existing natural resources for agroecological production. This tool is captured in a map that classifies land according to its suitability for horticulture, fruit and vegetable growing, beekeeping, and so on. The project aims to promote food sovereignty and combat climate change, as well as halt the loss of usable agricultural land.
- Seed Guardians: This is a seed bank that the Unión de Campesinos has been safeguarding since 2002, where they recover traditional seeds and knowledge. Thanks to it, the horticultural biodiversity of our fields is preserved and seeds are kept alive. It is open to collaborations.
Rural Schools rely on both public and private entities to finance their programs and tools.
