The Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 will establish a framework for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals to eradicate hunger and poverty through improved public policies in support of Family Farming .

Currently, nearly 80% of the population living in extreme poverty lives in rural areas and works in agriculture. Therefore, allocating resources to support family farmers is essential to ending poverty in all its forms and dimensions.

The adoption of the IYFF+10 Decade for Family Farming 2019-2028 is the result of a long process that began in 2008 with the Campaign to Declare the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF-2014 ), coordinated by the World Rural Forum and driven by several organizations. This initiative "gave greater visibility to the role of family farming, pastoralism, and small farms as practices that contribute to achieving food security and improved nutrition."

The declaration of this Decade by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20th has been possible thanks to the work of international organizations such as FAO , IFAD , ILC and IICA and the support of the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) , the Specialized Meeting on Family Farming (REAF) , the Community of Portuguese Language States (CPLP) and more than 300 other civil society organizations, governments, research centers, international organizations and cooperatives, among others, led by the Government of Costa Rica.
