Innovating in the management of Spanish forests, promoting communication and training and coordinating the stakeholders involved are its objectives.

The Natura 2000 Network was established in 1992 with the aim of ensuring the long-term survival of species and habitat types in Europe, helping to halt biodiversity loss. Today, it is the European Union's main instrument for nature conservation. In Spain, the area protected by the Natura 2000 Network represents approximately 27% of the Spanish territory.

An analysis of protected areas in Spain reveals that forests occupy more than half of our Natura 2000 Network. Spanish forests provide us with a wide variety of services and are key ecosystems within the Mediterranean. Our forests are currently under stress and threats due to the numerous social and economic changes of recent decades. In this context, the search for new management models that combine nature conservation, sustainability, and resilience to climate change has become a major challenge.

RedBosques was created as a means of improving the management of forests in the Spanish Mediterranean region included in the Natura 2000 Network. This project's objectives are:

- provide reference models that allow the assessment of the conservation status of Mediterranean forests.

-provide tools and criteria for incorporating biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation objectives into forest planning and silvicultural management.

- ensure the transfer of knowledge to stakeholders involved in forest management.

RedBosques' medium-term objective is to carry out a series of actions , ranging from the launch of a directory of stakeholders interested in the project to an exchange program between technical teams responsible for the management and planning of Natura 2000 forests throughout Spain. Also noteworthy are the actions aimed at identifying a "Reference Stand Network " for different forest types; establishing a working group of managers to produce project materials; disseminating good forestry management practices with conservation and adaptation objectives; designing training and practical activities (such as those carried out on three pilot farms in the Parc Natural dels Ports); and, finally, disseminating these actions through the media.

This project is aimed at the various management teams of forests protected by the Natura 2000 Network, whether private companies or public administrations, and is open to the participation of new professionals involved in forest management.

RedBosques is funded by the European Union through the LIFE Environmental Governance and Information 2015 program and has the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment through the Biodiversity Foundation .
