The projects for the improvement of the "Vasco Navarra" and "Plazaola" Nature Trails are presented.

On September 19, the presentation of the future renovation works to be carried out on more than 19 kilometers of Nature Trails located in the Basque Country and Navarre took place in Estella (Navarre). The objective of this renovation is to restore two former railway lines and convert them into sections that will form part of the "Vasco Navarro" and "Plazaola" Nature Trails.

The Basque-Navarre Railway Nature Trail will connect the towns of Arbeiza, Zubielqui, Zufía, and Murieta and will run close to such emblematic sites as the Ega and Urederra rivers and the Sierra de Lokiz mountain range, all part of the Natura 2000 network . Its route will approach the town of Estella-Lizarra, a city founded by and for the Camino de Santiago. There, walkers will find a wide range of cultural offerings and can visit the Church and cloister of San Pedro de la Rua, the Basque-Navarre Railway station, the Church of San Miguel, the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, and the Roldán and Ferragut Capital. The works have been promoted by the Basque-Navarre Railway Association , the Montejurra Association , and the TEDER Association. The project is expected to take nine months to complete.

Furthermore, the renovation works on the Plazaola Nature Trail section will connect the municipalities of Irurtzun, Arakil, and Iza. Once completed, only 10 km will remain to connect Pamplona with the rest of the trail. This project includes the rehabilitation and renovation of the Gulina viaduct and the opportunity to visit the Casa Hospital granary, the monument and church of Santiago de Itxasperri, the Casa Ballaz granary, the church of San Vicente, and the Yarte monastery, monuments of great historical and artistic interest located in the municipalities of Arakil and Iza. The works on this route have been promoted by the Plazaola Tourism Consortium and are expected to be completed within 12 months.

These projects will be co-financed by the 2014–2020 National Rural Development Program of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food, and Environment and by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). Both routes will join the more than nine thousand five hundred kilometers of existing Nature Trails . These nature trails enhance the nature, historical and cultural heritage, and gastronomy of the places they pass through, contributing to economic development based on sustainable tourism.
