Smart specialization involves leveraging regional strengths, competitive advantages, and potential for excellence by aligning practice-based innovation, science, technology, knowledge sharing and dissemination, and networking to create new opportunities for economic growth.

The Smart LEADER methodology reflects on the role that smart specialization can play in supporting rural development initiatives and connecting them with other research and innovation initiatives, such as those deployed at the regional and European levels through HORIZON 2020 multi-stakeholder projects and the EAFRD Operational Groups.

Its promoters, aware of the importance of innovation and research today, aim to contribute to its application in rural areas, strengthen traditional alliances by incorporating knowledge, and improve multi-level governance.

The report presented at the 1st Smarter Conference, organized by the European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC) as part of the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3), is available in both Spanish and English at this link .
