The island's first rural hackathon will be held under the slogan "Innovating in rural Gran Canaria," but has finally been postponed to October 21-23.

6.10.2016

The Gran Canaria Island Association for Rural Development ( Aider Gran Canaria ) has organized CoRural, with nearly 50 participants from different rural areas. The event will feature diverse dynamics, debates, presentations of experiences, and success stories to address the problems facing the rural population of the Canary Islands, such as isolation; an aging population; the abandonment of agricultural activities; depopulation of rural areas; a lack of infrastructure and services; and employment and training among the rural population to develop an action plan that can be implemented on the island. The event will take place at the Santa Brígida Multipurpose Center in Las Palmas.

CoRural participants will include programmers, designers, rural workers, engineers, and marketing specialists, who will work in group sessions to find technological solutions to the problems they identify.

Among the topics selected for discussion are employment; quality of life; territory; heritage; the environment; competitiveness; and cooperation. Participants will be advised by mentors, speakers, and professionals from various sectors.

In the field of innovation, proposals will be made for the use of technology and other elements such as drones, nanotechnology, 3D printing or the need to use Big Data (in Spanish, massive data, which consists of the creation of a huge database and the analysis of these to obtain information, correlations, patterns, etc.), and solutions that participants apply to promote rural development will be sought.

On the final day, a jury of experts will decide the winning solutions and award three prizes proposed by the organizers. Registration for the hackathon is open to the public through the website http://www.aidergc.com/co-rural/ , where all event information can be found.

The Gran Canaria Island Council, through the Gran Canaria Economic Promotion Society, the Santa Brígida City Council, the Cajamar Canary Foundation, Millac, and Global are the sponsors of this initiative.
