27.03.2017

The Autonomous Communities, the agri-food sector, and environmental organizations have presented their proposals for a Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) tailored to the challenges facing Spanish agriculture and the agri-food and environmental outlook. Direct payments , markets and the safety net , the food chain , rural development , and the agri-food outlook were the starting point for an open, in-depth, and ongoing forum for debate that the Ministry launched with this conference held on March 27 and 28.

Its objective is to identify the future role of Spanish agriculture in Europe in 2020 , taking into account territorial, sectoral, and sustainability perspectives that ensure and strengthen the competitiveness of our agri-food system.

With this initiative, the Ministry aims to gather all possible contributions to develop Spain's initial common position, which will be presented to the Sectoral Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food, and the Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, and the Vice-President of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Clara Aguilera García, opened this high-level conference, "Building the CAP of the future," at CaixaForum in Madrid.

Based on the conclusions reached, work will begin on a proposal for Spain's common initial position, which must be approved at the Sectoral Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development.

The minister highlighted the important role the CAP has played as an element of stability and certainty that has allowed for the consolidation of a solid agri-food sector. Isabel Tejerina advocates maintaining the CAP at the heart of the European agenda.
