Open call: Olive grove aid program
GOALS
The program's primary objective is the conservation of the Bonelli's eagle, a nesting species in the area. However, as it improves the farms' overall biodiversity, other species essential to local ecosystems and vulnerable populations will also benefit, restoring ecosystem services that have been lost due to agricultural intensification.
The program is designed to support farmers in the region by implementing sustainable agricultural practices that not only benefit the environment but also improve farm profitability. This will be achieved through:
- Reduction of agricultural costs : Less use of tillage, chemical inputs and resources.
- Increased value of agricultural products : Potential access to environmental certifications and sustainable markets.
- Social benefits : Generation of green jobs and strengthening of local identity.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
This program will be implemented in selected olive groves in the municipalities of Atarfe, Albolote and Pinos Puente, in the province of Granada , prioritizing key areas for the conservation of the target species.
PERFORMANCES
The program includes a set of agro-environmental measures tailored to local needs, such as:
- Establishment of refuge areas for wildlife and/or recovery of unproductive spaces (e.g., uncultivated margins).
- Species promotion through the installation of feeders and waterers for partridges, boulders, nest boxes, bat shelters, and pollinator cells.
- Reduction of intensive tillage and use of chemical inputs.
- Implementation and proper management of herbaceous cover, taking advantage of the benefits it provides, such as reducing erosion, allowing more water to enter the soil and accumulate, and improving pollination between plants.
- Technical advice and support for participating farmers throughout the program.
These measures have been designed to maximize ecological benefits while minimizing potential economic impacts.
AID
The program has a budget funded by the sponsoring entity , with the aim of ensuring the viability and sustainability of the proposed actions. Direct financial incentives are included for farmers whose farms are selected for implementation of the measures, for implementing the determined good practices. These incentives will be paid annually after verification that the agreed-upon good practices have been followed. Furthermore, the cost of implementing the measures and environmental monitoring will be covered by the sponsoring entity, with no additional cost to the landowner.
