The National Focus Group on Forestry Innovation concludes its work with the presentation of its final documents.

The National Focus Group on Forestry Innovation presents the final documents of its work. This is a pioneering group, being the second of the Focus Groups coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment within the framework of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (AEI-agri), currently being developed in Spain.

Its main objectives have been, on the one hand, to bring innovation closer to the forestry sector and, on the other, to discuss how the sector could improve its organization, structure, and cooperation in relation to the implementation of new models for the use, transportation, and marketing of forest products.

To form this National Focus Group, a selection of interested experts was made after they submitted their candidacies. The work methodology was networked and consisted of completing the Innovation Database for Improving the Economic Sustainability of the Forestry Sector and preparing a series of final documents. During the National Focus Group's active period, two in-person meetings were held in Madrid to present the progress of its members' work.

Among the final documents presented is the Socioeconomic Diagnosis of the Spanish Forestry Sector , which reports on the current situation of its subsectors, such as timber and veneer, chipboard, resin, pine nuts, cork, beekeeping, and mushrooms. It also provides a brief analysis of improved genetic material and the treatment of pests and diseases affecting our forests.

As a conclusion to its work, this National Focus Group presents a Priority Document for consideration by the Spanish forestry sector, focusing on its classic areas:

  1. Applied research on forestry topics: focused on determining the possibilities of using a physical or biological principle to achieve a desired goal.
  2. Technological development: consists of designing the system, procedure, equipment or machine that, by applying what has been discovered in research, could provide us with the solution to a given problem.
  3. Innovation: aimed at the application of technology developed in the previous field.
  4. Information, training, and advice: to spread the word about the use of this technology and thus enable it to achieve greater performance.

The creation and evolution of this National Focus Group has opened the door to new focus groups that, in the future, will be formed within the AEI-agri innovation programs in Spain, as well as to the formation of operational groups for the development of projects in the forestry sector, which will implement the identified innovation priorities.
