Women's associations and other stakeholders meet with the Directorate General for Rural Development and Forestry Policy to discuss Shared Ownership.
24.05.2017
The debate on shared ownership of agricultural holdings continues. Following the first meeting of the Working Group on Shared Ownership with the Autonomous Communities on April 25, a meeting was held today on the Law on Shared Ownership of Agricultural Holdings with rural women's associations , professional agricultural organizations , and agri-food cooperatives , chaired by Esperanza Orellana, Director General of Rural Development and Forestry Policy.
The objective of this meeting was to analyze the actions linked to the process of registering agricultural holdings under the shared ownership regime and to debate those aspects that could promote the correct development of Law 35/2011 on Shared Ownership of Agricultural Holdings , and ultimately, the appreciation of women 's work in the agricultural sector .
Six years after the Law was passed, the number of jointly owned farms in the Register of Jointly Owned Farms has increased to the current 290 , highlighting the work of women in the agricultural sector . However, it is believed that the rate of incorporation of farms into this system should be higher. To analyze the reasons that could justify this limited growth, it is essential to understand the assessment of the Law's implementation by national rural women's associations, professional agricultural organizations, and agri-food cooperatives.
For this reason, this debate has been opened, which will allow us to identify the aspects that need to be strengthened in order to advance towards the full equality of rights and obligations of men and women arising from the ownership of an agricultural holding .
During the meeting, a number of barriers to the optimal implementation of the Law were identified, including the level of lack of awareness about it, the need to increase awareness among men, women, and technicians in rural areas , and the need to facilitate the registration process in regional registries . From here, work will continue to overcome the identified barriers and analyze the viability of the various proposals generated.
